Once called Islip Airport, the Long Island MacArthur Airport is located in Ronkonkoma New York on Long Island. It is owned and operated by the town of Islip, and well over 2 million people use this airport on an annual basis. It covers over 1300 acres and has two helipads along with three runways that are used on a daily basis. It serves Suffolk County and Nassau County, and is often used as an alternative for those that are not able to land at either JFK or LaGuardia. When Was It Built?

The town of Islip worked with the federal government in order to build an airfield strictly for military use. It was designed in funded by the Civil Aeronautics Administration, which is essentially the modern FAA today. At that time, as is there right now, there are three paved runways. The reason there was renamed to the Long Island MacArthur Airport is because of how Gen. MacArthur was able to escape from the Philippines. It wasn’t until the 1940s that Lockheed built a hangar at the airport. Half a decade later, the first terminal building for the airport was designed and built.

By the 1970s, large airlines such as American began to land 727’s that were headed out to Chicago at O’Hare. Subsequently, Allegheny began to run flights to Albany and Washington DC. After that, more flights going to Boston and Bridgeport were added. According to the Official Airline Guide, it revealed that passenger jets that landed at this airport followed a specific schedule. Overall, it is an airport that is used by millions and is a place that you should visit if you ever end up on the East Coast of the United States.
