Sunken Meadow State Park – A Hidden Gem in Smithtown

This is located on Long Island, is one of the most popular destinations for those that are visiting this area of the East Coast. It is part of the Town of Smithtown, located in Suffolk County, and is specifically on the north shore of Long Island proper. It’s an easy place to find, and if you enjoy golfing and sightseeing, this is an ideal place to bring yourself or even your family. It was also called the Alfred E Smith State Park, which encompasses over 1200 acres, and provides anyone that visits with memories about its beauty and access to the water.

What Can You Do With The State Park?

In general, this is a family-friendly park. It is one of the few that has 3 miles of beach giving you access to Long Island Sound. This was originally started back in the 1920s and has been maintained ever since. There are hiking trails, biking trails, and water sports that you can play. You can also go horseback riding while you are there. General recreation activities are also provided for everyone. If you enjoy things soccer, or if you need playgrounds for your children, you can easily access all of this and more.

Additional Things You Can Do At The Park

People often have weddings at the Pavilion which is only available during the summer. It is because of the beautiful view from that location. If you enjoy golf, there is also the Sunken Meadow State Park golf course which features not 18 but 27 holes, each of which is very challenging for experts and beginners. All of them were designed by Alfred Tull, and if you don’t enjoy golf, you can always do cross-country running and participate in the competitions that are there. This will include a 5 km course which involves running up the aptly named Cardiac Hill, or you can simply sit at the beach and watch the water.

If you visit Sunken Meadow State Park in the near future, try to arrive at the end of spring to experience the blooming of flowers and also the much warmer weather. You can even visit all throughout the summer and into the early months of fall. The weather at this location, like most of Long Island, is going to be problematic during the winter. Therefore, if you are traveling with your significant other, or if you have planned a family trip to the East Coast of the United States, this would be a great place to begin your visit to this iconic location.
