One of the most unique universities on Long Island is Stony Brook University. It is also referred to as the State University of New York at Stony Brook. There are only four University centers that are part of the state University system, and this is one of them. Located in Suffolk County, it is the largest of all public universities in New York, comprising over 200 buildings spread out over nearly 1500 acres. Initially set up near Oyster Bay, it is now at Stony Brook, and is a member of the Universities Research Association.

The key to its success has been the constant management of the school system which is extremely comprehensive. Its size, and notoriety, has also been helpful in maintaining funding for this university.
