Sagamore Hill National Historic Site – Quick Look

Located near Cove Neck, and also the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary, the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site is a very popular destination. Origin Of This Historic Site

Teddy Roosevelt often spent his summers in the Oyster Bay area. Back in his early 20s, he obtained over 150 acres of land for about $30,000. This is the Cove Peninsula. Positioned near the hamlet of Oyster Bay, he and his uncle built an estate home there not too far from the Sagamore Hill property. Architectural firms were brought in from New York, and the location was named Sagamore Hill which is in reference to a chieftain at the time. A total of 23 rooms were added to this magnificent complex. It is surrounded by farmland, and soon became known as the Summer White House.

Reasons To Visit This Location

Although it is not currently open to the public, it is one of the finest guided tours you will ever go on. Admission to the property is free, and while you are at the Theodore Roosevelt Museum, you can learn all about the life of this president which was so popular. Back in the 1930s, the museum was placed in what was called the Old Orchard, but after great restorations, the main residence is something to see. Although there was a fire back in 2018 that did damage the visitor center, once it is restored, it will available to all.

The Sagamore Hill National Historic Site is something that everyone should see. There are also places that you can visit that are nearby. There are nature trails that you can walk on, a beach, and the museum itself. It is a destination that anyone on Long Island should visit at least once. If you are not aware of the history of the US, or about Theodore Roosevelt, you will certainly understand more about his life and his influence on this country. Once it reopens, it should be on your list of places to visit when you are on the East Coast of the US.
