Overview Of Brookhaven State Park

Brookhaven State Park encompasses nearly 1700 acres, located near Wading River New York. It is located just 70 miles from New York City, and was established back in 1971. It was once referred to as the Brookhaven National Laboratory, and currently today, it protects a lot of the Long Island Pine Barrens. It is a location with many different wetlands and has come a long way since it was initially used as a military installation camp. Hikers enjoy the area because of the Brookhaven trail which had South throughout the park. There are many trees there including dogwood, oak trees, and pine trees as well.

Reasons To Visit The Park

Part of the allure for this park is its rich history. Although the Brookhaven National Laboratory is no longer there, there is still the memory of its role in the early 60s regarding nuclear energy. It is also ideally positioned on Long Island, just past the center of the island, which is where all of the hiking, hunting, and trails are located. Therefore, it is the ideal location for anyone that enjoys the great outdoors, and all that Long Island has to offer in terms of its location and rich history.

What Can You Do At The Park?

There are plenty of things to do at the Brookhaven National Park. If you happen to have animals with you, you are only allowed to bring into at a time. Pets have to be supervised at all times, and the leash should not extend more than 6 feet. There have been reports of rabies in the area, which is why staying on the trails is highly recommended. There are many other activities that you can do such as go to the garden beaches, boardwalks, golf courses, and the many buildings that are found throughout the area. If you want to get a feel for the history of Long Island, this is a great place to begin.

It is advisable that you visit during the summer months when the weather is not as incremental. It is not advisable to travel there during the winter at all. It is in a location that receives a substantial amount of bad weather. High winds are also notable during this time of the year. However, if you do want to see the East Coast of the United States, and have never been to Long Island, this is a great place to begin. Plenty of hiking, sightseeing, and history revolves around Brookhaven State Park which anyone should certainly visit.
